ABSTRACT
Aim: The article demonstrates the practice of mindfulness in family counselling.
Family counselling as well as therapy offers a lot of different possibilities. There are at
least a couple of schools of therapeutic work with the family. Each school has its own
theories as well as effective and validated techniques. In such practice, the virtues of the
counsellor and the quality of the therapeutic alliance between him and the family are
especially important. Both features are connected with the issue of special gravity,
namely with the therapist’s mindfulness, which includes elementary and spontaneous
openness to experience. It can be as well understood as a virtue, a characteristic feature,
and a remarkable ability demanding continuous improvement.
Methods: The research problem lies in answering the question: What is the family
therapist’s mindfulness as a practice of upholding the non-judgemental attention, which
fosters the process of accompanying the family, building the relationship with them,
helping them and achieving the desired changes?
The results of analysed source literature (research conducted to date) and empirical
references to experiences with therapeutic work with families were used when preparing
the article.
Results: The study demonstrate the significance of the therapist’s mindfulness as
an instrument facilitating better understanding of the family.The attitude of nurturing the attention, the art of insight and sympathy shaped by him supports the family in
managing to get to the substance of the problem. Mindfulness in work with the whole
family (or its part) is a special challenge for a therapist. He tries to share his attention
with every member of the family system. His mindfulness stimulates the family to
practice the avoidance of inattention. Thus, it constitutes a way to a mutual understanding
as a consequence.
Conclusions: Adopting a counselling perspective as well as in psychotherapy,
a role of mindfulness was analyzed as a special attitude of exceptional openness, which
is a necessary trait of therapists. This remarkable disposition to immerse with all senses
into „being here now in the moment”. Mindfulness bears a remarkably valuable component
of accompanying patient without making any judgements. Precisely, this factor
makes people, who are helped to become more candid. Mindfulness as a technique, attitude,
ability or art requires continuous practice. Beneficial effects can be brought
about by optimally using this concentration of mind, focusing one’s look or pricking up
one’s ears. Therapeutic work would be ineffective and even undertaking it would be inappropriate.
Without adopting the attitude of mindfulness. On the other hand, even very
experienced therapists are not able to be constantly observant. It is simply impossible, but
being cognizant of one’s own inattentiveness can be useful in the therapeutic process.
